Where is the civility?

When I was growing up, the Golden Rule was pushed down my throat pretty much on a daily basis.  For those who may not know, the Golden Rule is “Do unto others as you would have done unto you”.  This means to treat others as you would want them to treat you.  When did we forget this?  When did we change to “I’ll do what I want and your feelings be damned”?

There is a shift in our country’s morality to selfishness and total narcissism.  People seem to think that if someone has a different opinion than they do, not only are they wrong but they deserve to be called names and be degraded in some way.  It seems that people have forgotten that we are all different, have different thoughts, different experiences and God forbid, different opinions.

I’m not saying that we can’t have discussions and try and change someone’s mind but there is a way to do that.  And that way is not name calling, cursing, threatening and using demeaning words.  The proper way is to act like a grown up, to stay calm and express your thoughts in clear, concise words.  We should also know when to say that this is not working and words may begin to get heated so maybe we should just stop this conversation.

Does anyone have any ideas on how we could change this shift back to the days when civility reigned?  Can we bring back morals and ethics and just good old fashioned neighborly love?

Please feel free to comment or send me an email.  I would love to hear some of your thoughts.
