New Year Resolutions

How many of you make New Year Resolutions?  How many of you make these resolutions every year only to have forgotten them by January 2nd?  I’ll admit that I have made them before and probably will again but never truly take them seriously.

I wonder what person back in the day, decided that January 1st was the only day we could make life changing decisions.  Is there a law written in some ancient text that says I can’t change my life on July 1st, September 15th or even October 31st?  Not in my mind.  I think any day you make a decision and stick to it, do all the work needed, that is a good day.

I know there are changes that need to be made in my own life.  I need to get in better shape, lose some weight and become better organized.  I also know that I cannot make  these changes all in one day.  Doing so will make the changes too much to handle and I will have already defeated myself.  Doing so will also sabotage my self confidence making sure I won’t even try to make changes in the future.  Why should I?  I tried before and failed.

So what I did was sit down and make a list of those things that I want to change.  First my weight.  I started small, trying to cut back on the sweets and trying to keep more fruit and “healthy” snacks the house.  Small steps.  I have a HUGE Diet Pepsi addiction that I have tried to cut out by alternating a glass of soda with a glass of water.  Small steps.  I have also put more effort into cooking from scratch, or as close to it as possible.  Slightly bigger steps. Have you looked at the labels of some processed, convenience foods? Why would we put foods in our bodies that have ingredients that aren’t pronounceable?

I have also begun getting up in the morning and doing some yoga.  I have heard some put down yoga as a practice from a religion contradictory of their own.  I don’t see it that way at all.  I see it as a way to lie on a mat and clear my brain.  I see it as a way to help me cope with stresses in life.  I also see it as a way to enjoy the few moments of the day that I have completely to myself.

If you have a few moments go to YouTube and check out ZENner Mobile Yoga.  I met Jennifer when she ran a yoga class here in Colorado Springs.  She has moved on to another state but has opened a YouTube channel to bring her style of yoga to others.  She is amazing and she won’t let you down.

As for organization, there are about a million Pinterest pages and YouTube channels teaching you how to organize your life, your home, your office, even your closet.  Some made sense to me, some didn’t.  I looked through as many as I could before my eyes started to hurt and took from them what I thought would work for me.  I spent an entire day in my office figuring out what I needed to keep, what I could let go and where to put everything so it worked for MY needs.  It isn’t perfect and I still make changes every week but it is much better than it was.  One thing you need to remember, having a cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind.  You won’t be able to think, your creativity will be stifled and you will not function at your highest level.  Trust me, that last sentence describes me exactly.

What things would you like to work on in your life?  Is there any way I can help you with these changes?  Send me an email, shoot me a comment and let me know.  I would love to hear from the people who read these pages and listen to my thoughts.

I hope you are all enjoying this holiday season, no matter what the holiday you celebrate.  Even if you don’t celebrate any holiday at all, my wish for you is that you find some peace and love in your life.  These days the whole world could use a little peace and love.  I hope we find it, and soon.
